This week: 13 favorite songs you discovered this year.

4. Sufjan Stevens, “The Lakes of Canada” (a cover of an Innocence Mission song)

5. Derek Webb, “Name”

8. Andrew Osenga, “Swing Wide the Glimmering Gates”

9. Over the Rhine, “Who’ I Kiddin’ But Me?”

10. Iron & Wine, “The Devil Never Sleeps”

11. Christian Kane, “LA Song” (yes, it’s from Angel, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off. it’s still a good song, dang it)

12. John Newton, “I Asked the Lord”

13. Sandra McCracken, “Rock of Ages (When the Day Seems Long)”

  1. I like song number 1, and in response to your previous blog, what do you think about the idea that silence may not involve quieting the inside, but rather allowing your thoughts to go where they will, but being more conscious of them and coming to some sort of self-knowledge that way? I think that is what was talked about on the Crane Scholar’s retreat this year. It was really interesting, because usually we think we’re supposed to shut ourselves up, but maybe this isn’t really the way to be receptive? Just a thought.
