thursday 13

This week: Thirteen elements of your ultimate road trip, if time, money, and logic were no object.

1. Car with very good gas mileage and very good stereo system.

2. Route 66. Highway 1 in California.

3. As many friends as could comfortably fit in the car.

4. Either a large number of CDs or a bunch of well-equipped iPods.

5. A detour somewhere to Joshua Tree National Park–yes, while listening to Joshua Tree.

6. Has to include some time in mid-August so we could watch the Perseid meteor showers in the mountains somewhere.

7. Hiking. (Seriously. I like hiking.)

8. Lots of coffee.

9. A detour to Seattle and Pike’s Place Market.

10. A good concert at a good venue.

11. Conversation at three in the morning at a diner in the middle of nowhere.

12. Sunrise.

13. Stop at a casino somewhere and play slots.

  1. 1) A convertible (or a car with a good sunroof) that was actually bigger than a breadbox, so i didn’t feel like i was being hard-pressed on every side (but not crushed).

    2) Roadmaps of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho/Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. (Getting the idea?)

    3) Hiking Carlsbad Caverns. Watching the bats fly at night.

    4) Tombstone, Arizona.

    5) Cubs Spring Training for a week or two.

    6) Touring Alcatraz.

    7) A Sunday at Mars Hill Church, Seattle.

    8) Mount Rushmore.

    9) The Gospel Coalition Conference in Chicago.

    10) 3-4 day games at Wrigley.

    11) (Short) visit with the extended family in Michigan.

    12) Longer visits with the college “family” in Oklahoma / North Texas.

    13) Coming home to find I have not been fired/evicted/bankrupted.
